During at least one of a plurality of successive partial program steps, a first medium is heated at least at times by means of a first heating element and items undergoing treatment are heated by applying the heated first medium to the items. When the first heating element is inactive, a second medium is heated at least at times by means of a second heating element and the items undergoing the treatment are heated 'by the heated second medium.
