<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the operating position of a shift lever always with accuracy at the time of manufacture even if the gradients of sensor output characteristics are changed with the elapse of time. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this shift lever operating position detection device, the shift operation amount sensor output characteristics indicated by solid lines are obtained from a second-speed shift operation amount sensor output learned value V2 and a fifth-speed shift operation amount sensor output learned value V5, and the gradients of the characteristics ΔD are calculated. In the same manner, the initial sensor output characteristic when manufacture indicated by a chain line is obtained, and the gradient thereof ΔD is calculated. Next, a present neutral position sensor output VN is obtained from a sensor output gradient change rate (ΔD/ΔD0), a sensor output center value VM, and the initial neutral position sensor output VN0 using VN=VM-(VM-VN0)×ΔD/ΔD0, and the changed amount ΔVNRMP=VN-VN0 of the neutral position sensor output VN from the initial value VN0 due to a change in the gradient of the sensor output is obtained. The change rate of gradient ΔD/ΔD0 is multiplied by a shift stage selecting position determination sensor output value for use of the calculation of the target shift stage. The initial neutral position sensor output VN0 is corrected by an amount of neutral position sensor output change amount ΔVNRMP for use of the calculation of the target shift stage.
