PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a phosphonic acid producible by general-purpose chemical reaction facilities. SOLUTION: The method for producing a phosphonic acid represented by the general formula (II) (R1is a 1-15C alkyl group which may contain a substituent group or an aralkyl group in which a part of hydrogen atoms of a 1-10C alkyl group is substituted with an aryl group having 1-4 benzene rings which may contain a substituent group) comprises a process for subjecting a corresponding phosphonic acid ester compound to a hydrolysis reaction at≥100°C in the presence of a nonvolatile acid while providing water by blowing a water vapor to form a phosphonic acid represented by general formula (II).
