<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a softener for paper which gives the paper having good softness and smoothness and giving a moist feeling, and hardly deteriorates paper strength. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The softener for the paper comprises glycerol (A), a polyoxyalkylene methyl glucoside (B), and diglycerol (C), wherein the polyoxyalkylene methyl glucoside (B) has 2-3 C oxyalkylene group; the average additional molar number of the alkylene oxide is 5 to 30; the mass ratio of the glycerol (A) to the polyoxyalkylene methyl glucoside (B) is 75/25 to 98/2; and the mass ratio of the polyoxyalkylene methyl glucoside (B) to the diglycerol (C) is 40/60 to 90/10.
