<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material (a brake pad) reduced in occurrence of a squeak in the cold (at around -10°C, for example). Ž<P>SOLUTION: The friction material is produced by adding a binder, a lubricant, a friction adjusting material, a filler, and the like to a base material. In the friction adjusting material, cashew dust, which is subjected to heat treatment at around 500-1,100°C in an inert gas atmosphere, is added.
