PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and high-performance zoom lens which has a wide angle of view at the wide angle end and wide-angle high variable power, and to provide an optical apparatus having the zoom lens, and a zooming method. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in order from the object side, a first lens group G1 of negative refractive power, a second lens group G2 of positive refractive power, a third lens group G3 of positive refractive power, and a fourth lens group G4 of negative refractive power. The first lens group G1 has a negative lens L11 and a positive lens L12. To zoom from the wide-angle end to the telephoto end, intervals between the first lens group G1 to the fourth lens group G4 are varied, and the fourth lens group G4 is fixed to an image plane I.
