A bending table for bending the edge of a sheet 6 comprises a clamp 2 and a bendng ram 4 guided in vertical guides 5 one of which, adjacent the edge of the sheet, is contacted by a roller 7 forming the part of the ram 4 to which substantially all of the bending is accredited as the ram moves vertically upwards. An interchangeable stop 8 at the top end of the ram is used to control the width of the edge being bent up. In a method of welding a seam between two sheet metal edges, one of the edges to be welded is bent normal, or approximately normal, to the plane of the sheet and the projecting edge is fused into the weld. The bent edge may project a distance equal, or approximately equal, to the sheet thickness. The weld may be pressed flat after welding. The weld may be disposed at an angle, preferably 30-45 degrees, to the expected direction of the main tensile force incurred in use of the welded product. |
