The device has a magnetic region arranged at a point of a control or a part cooperating with a movement of the control. A sensor, arranged at a stationary part, corresponds to a magnetic field of the magnetic region and produces an output signal representative for the position of the control. A magnetic region is designed as an oblong magnetic region extending in a direction of a neutral path (3). The sensor is designed such that it corresponds to a direction of the magnetic field, and the magnetic regions are designed as physically separated magnets.
