<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which prevents image defects due to discharge occurring in the vicinity of a transfer nip part and prevents also image defects such as color misregistration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier 5 on which an image is formed by a developer; a transfer member 6 which is provided to face the image carrier and transfers the developer image formed on the image carrier to a recording medium 17; and moving means 21K and 22K which move the transfer member in at least a medium conveyance direction. The transfer member 6 is moved in at least the medium conveyance direction, so that a space between the recording medium 17 and the image carrier 5 immediately before the transfer member 6 can be reduced to prevent image defects due to discharge.
