<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of computing a boundary position of a covering film formed on a battery electrode-use sheet etc., even when the covering film is made thin. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An apparatus which detects a boundary of the covering film formed on the battery electrode-use sheet 2 (object to be measured), includes: laser light sources 41, 42 (irradiation means) for irradiating a surface of the battery electrode-use sheet 2 with slit light; CCD cameras 51, 52 (photographing means) for photographing the surface of the battery electrode-use sheet 2 onto which the slit light is projected; a linewidth-variation point specifying means 65 (first specifying means) for specifying a linewidth-variation point where a linewidth of the photographed slit light varies discontinuously in the images photographed by the CCD cameras 51, 52; and a first boundary computing means 68 for computing the boundary position of the covering film formed on the surface of the battery electrode-use sheet 2, based on the position of the linewidth-variation point specified in the photographed image.
