PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antiviral agent having excellent safety and easily applicable to the production of products to use the agent. SOLUTION: The antiviral agent contains, as an active component, an anionic surfactant selected from a group consisting of a metal salt of a higher fatty acid of formula R<SP>1</SP>CH<SB>2</SB>COOH (R<SP>1</SP>is a 7-20C aliphatic hydrocarbon group), its sulfonic acid ester or sulfuric acid ester; a metal salt of a sulfuric acid ester of a higher fatty acid ester of formula R<SP>2</SP>COOR<SP>3</SP>(R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and the total carbon atoms of R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>is 8-21); a metal salt of a sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid ester of a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol fatty acid of formula R<SP>4</SP>COOCH<SB>2</SB>CH(OH)(CH<SB>2</SB>OH) (R<SP>4</SP>is an 8-21C aliphatic hydrocarbon group); a metal salt of a sulfonic acid of a higher fatty acid ester of formula R<SP>5</SP>COOCH<SB>2</SB>SO<SB>3</SB>H (R<SP>5</SP>is an 8-21C aliphatic hydrocarbon group); and a metal salt of a compound of formula R<SP>6</SP>OCOCH(R<SP>7</SP>OCOCH<SB>2</SB>)SO<SB>3</SB>H (R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>7</SP>are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and the total carbon atoms of R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>7</SP>is 8-21).
