<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of reducing a load in processing gradation value data. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus has: a sum corresponding value calculator that calculates a sum corresponding value based on a sum value of a saturation evaluation value of a picture element positioned in a rectangle in which a corner contacting with an arbitrary picture element in an image and a corner contacting with a reference picture element in the image are opposed, for the arbitrary picture element; an in-rectangle summation value calculator that calculates an in-rectangle summation value based on the sum corresponding value for adjacent picture elements which respectively contact with four apexes of an arbitrary target rectangle in the image, for the target picture element at a predetermined position in the target rectangle; and an attribute determining part that determines an attribute in the image for the target picture element based on the in-rectangle summation value for the target picture element.
