<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chalk line which can be simply repaired and maintained by a user. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The chalk line 1 has a housing 2 for supporting a spool 30 for winding a string or a line in a choke chamber 22. A transmission device for winding back the spool 30 is arranged in a separate compartment. The chalk-filled chamber 22 is isolated from the transmission device, and components arranged in the chamber 22 are the spool 30, the line, and chalk. A door 42 for access in the chamber 22 is opened by manually operating a latch 60. Further, a safety interlock is arranged so as not to carelessly unlock the latch 60.
