The method involves determining characteristic of fuel in a diesel internal-combustion engine (10) using a signal from a lambda sensor (19), where the characteristic of the fuel is a cetane number. A lambda value is determined from actual air mass and actual fuel mass. The lambda value is compared with another lambda value that is determined from the signal of the lambda sensor. Deviation between the lambda values is determined, and the deviation value is used as a qualitative reference to the cetane number of the fuel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating a diesel internal-combustion engine (2) an electronic storage medium comprising a computer program for performing a method for operating a diesel internal-combustion engine (3) a controlling and/or regulating device for operating a diesel internal-combustion engine.
