The invention relates to a locking system (2) for a motor vehicle (1), comprising at least one control device (4) having at least two modes and an electric key (9) pertaining thereto. First transmission/reception means (22) are connected to the control device (4) and the key (9) has two transmission/reception means (24), whereby at least one coded operating signal (11) can be transmitted between the first and second transmission/reception means when the key (9) and the control device (4) are operated according to instructions. The mode of the control device (4) can be modified when the transmitted operating signal (11) is positively evaluated and the key is authorized (9). At least one defined area is allocated to the first transmission/reception means (22), enabling the signal to be modified. The key (9) can be operated according to instructions without any intervention from the user (30) with respect to said key (9) when the key (9) is located in the defined area.
