<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water absorption preventive material maintaining water absorption preventing performance over a long time period, inhibiting occurrence of cracks on a coated surface, and preventing a coating film from peeling or whitening when it is applied to civil engineering and building materials. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This water absorption preventive material for civil engineering and building materials comprises (A) alkylalkoxysilane and/or its condensate, (B) organic bentonite obtained by reacting montmorillonite with quaternary ammonium ions and having a 33-50 ignition loss at 1,000°C, (C) a drying adjuster, and (D) hydrophobic silica.
