<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process which can be suitably used for inexpensively producing, in a high yield, cinchona alkaloids which are the catalysts or synthetic intermediates of the catalysts in the asymmetric 1,4-addition reaction for α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The process of producing 9-aminocinchona alkaloids of formula (5) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is hydrogen or an alkyl group and R<SP>2</SP>is hydrogen or an alkoxy group) comprises reacting cinchona alkaloids of formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are the same as defined above) with a halogenated sulfonyl compound in the presence of a base to produce 9-substituted sulfonyloxycinchona alkaloids, and successively reacting the 9-substituted sulfonyloxycinchona alkaloids with an azide salt of an alkali metal or the like to produce 9-azidocinchona alkaloids, and reacting the 9-azidocinchona alkaloids with a reducing agent.
