<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arrange an alternative region arrangement suitable for data recording having a high real time property in re-initialization processing for a rewritable optical disk. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a defect part detecting circuit 20 detects a defect part from a user data region of an optical disk 10, a defect management information generating and storing circuit 3 generates defect management information including at least an address of the defect part and the address of its alternative region and stores them. A defect region size measuring circuit 4 retrieves defect management information before re-initialization when re-initializing the optical disk 10, divides a whole user data region into a plurality of segments, measures defect region size for each segment, then, an alternative region size setting circuit 5 decides alternative region size which is allocated to each user data region after re-initialization based on the defect region size for each segment.
