<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontal multi-stage press apparatus capable of maintaining the thickness of a plate (laminated plywood) after being heat-bonded under pressure within an allowable dimensional range without moving and adjusting the pressing positions of pressure cylinders when the size of the carried-in plate changes by performing individual or batch control of driving of a plurality of pressure cylinders, and furthermore adaptable to a change or the like in the material of the plate. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Rams 153LH, 153RH, 153LL, 153RL of the respective pressure cylinders 150LH, 150RH, 150LL, 150RL are fixed to pressure plates 140F, 140B so that the pressing positions to the pressing surfaces 141 of the pressure plates 140F, 140B are unchanged. The pressure cylinders 150LH, 150RH, 150LL, 150RL are individually drive-controlled to perform heating and pressing treatment so that the total thickness of a treated object W after heat-pressed is within a predetermined allowable dimensional range over the whole pressing surface 141 even if the size or material of the treated plate W1 changes.
