The method involves detecting fire by a smoke detector (13), and sending an alarm signal to a bus line (21) of an illumination system (A), where the illumination system is transferred from a normal operating condition to an alarm condition. The alarm signal is received by a controller (10), and an alarm instruction is transmitted by the controller. Operating devices (1) in the alarm condition are alternatingly changed between a switching-on condition and a switching-off condition or high and low brightness values. An independent claim is also included for an illumination system with an operating device for the operation of an illuminant.
