<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a luminaire each achieving high quality by improving the performance of receiving an infrared remote control signal. <P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 10 and the luminaire are mounted on a ceiling surface for controlling an annular discharge lamp to be lit while converting a commercial power supply into high frequency power. A first printed board 11 is mounted with electronic components 13 constituting a discharge lamp lighting circuit part 14, and it is arranged at the center of the annular discharge lamp perpendicularly to the ceiling surface.
