<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder and an image forming apparatus, having simplified structure and mounting a paper remaining amount detection means with general versatility thereon. Ž<P>SOLUTION: As a detection means, a transmitter (or a receiver) is disposed to a lower face of a bottom plate as a paper loading part, and a receiver (or a transmitter) is disposed to the bottom of a feeding tray to be opposed to the transmitter (or the receiver) of the bottom plate to make a pair of a transmitter and a receiver. An output level of an output electric signal according to reception strength of the receiver is compared with a reference value of a storage device, and the paper remaining amount is detected by dividing into a plurality of stages to output it as a paper remaining amount.
