<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which directly detects positioning reference on recording paper while conveying the recording paper, so as to surely align a cutting target position set in advance with a cutting position in the printer, and also to provide a method for cutting the recording paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The printer 1 prints on paper alternatively selected from two or more kinds of recording paper 12a. When performing a printing job, the printer 1 detects aligning reference on the recording paper 12a such as a black mark 12c or an end of a label by using a reflection type photosensor 26 and a transmission type photosensor 27 at detecting positions F1 and F2 on a more upstream side than a printing position. When a printing start position D on the recording paper 12a which is being conveyed reaches the printing position C, the printer 1 decides the cutting target position E on the recording paper based on the detected result of the aligning reference, and also calculates a conveying amount for aligning the cutting target position E with the cutting position B by an automatic cutter 28.
