The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1) that comprises at least one cylinder (2) and that is equipped with: An atmospheric air intake (5) connected to an air supply duct (20) of said cylinder; a pressurised air tank (3) capable of storing air, directly or indirectly connected to said air supply duct (20) and directly connected to said cylinder (2) by a direct duct (9); an exhaust line (15) fitted with a catalytic converter (16); an electronic control unit (UCE) (13) capable of managing the operation of the engine (1) either in an exclusively pneumatic mode or in a totally or partially thermal mode. The electronic control unit is further capable of driving, during at least one heat operation mode of the engine, an injection of air from the tank (3) and flowing into the exhaust line (15) without being subjected to the consecutive compression-combustion phases in a cylinder (2).
