VARIABLE DISPERSION COMPENSATOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable dispersion compensator which compensates the wavelength dispersion characteristic of an optical signal in an optical fiber communication system.

SOLUTION: The variable dispersion compensator includes: an optical fiber 2 having a chirped grating formed therein; a temperature control element 3 on which the optical fiber 2 is mounted; a heater substrate 5 on the surface of which a plurality of heaters 4 are disposed along the optical axis 2a direction of the optical fiber 2 and the temperature control element 3 is mounted on the plurality of heaters 4; and a heater temperature controller 7 which supplies electric power to the plurality of heaters 4 and individually controls the temperature of each of the plurality of heaters 4. The dispersion characteristic of an optical fiber transmission path is compensated with high efficiency.
