PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a service life by reducing abrasion in a clip-type tensioner. SOLUTION: The rachet mechanism of the clip-type tensioner 1 is composed of: a plurality of rack teeth 31 formed on the outer periphery of a piston 3 and including first and second rack teeth 31A, 31B; a clip 6 elastically engaged with the rack teeth 31; and a recess 50 provided on the side of a housing and having a first surface 51 abutting on the clip 6 when the piston advances to allow forward movement of the piston 3 and a second surface 52 abutting on the clip 6 when the piston retreats and sandwiches the clip 6 between the second surface and the rack teeth 31 to regulate backward movement of the piston 3. The position of a contact point C<SB>1</SB>on the second surface 52 abutting on the clip 6 when the piston retreats with the clip 6 engaged with the first rack teeth 31A is different from the position of a contact point C<SB>2</SB>on the second surface 52 abutting on the clip 6 when the piston retreats with the clip 6 engaged with the second rack teeth 31B.
