PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified perovskite type composite oxide in which dielectric characteristics are equal to or higher than those before modification; elution of a coating component for modifying a perovskite type composite oxide from the coating component is not substantially observed; elution of A site metal of a perovskite type composite oxide is suppressed effectively; and crushing properties are good. SOLUTION: The modified perovskite type composite oxide is prepared by coating the particle surface of a perovskite type composite oxide with at least one selected from the group consisting of TiO<SB>2</SB>, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, ZrO<SB>2</SB>, and Nd<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>. The coating is formed by hydrolyzing at least one selected from the group consisting of a hydrolytic TiO<SB>2</SB>precursor, a hydrolytic Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>precursor, a hydrolytic ZrO<SB>2</SB>precursor, and a hydrolytic Nd<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>precursor and firing the resulting hydrolyzate at 700°C-1200°C.
