<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser beam welding method and a plate supporting device for adequately executing the laser beam welding even when the size of a plate is increased, and preventing the travel of an automatic welding machine from being disturbed. <P>SOLUTION: A step of partially matching the heights of weld faces of both plates by pushing up one weld side end of the butted plates 4 by a bolt 16, and a step of temporarily welding parts of the matched heights are successively repeated over the total length of the weld part.
