<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which improves surface recording density by increasing a track density, and which reduces thermal fluctuation resistance while maintaining surface flatness of the recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The recording track has a surface modified layer on the surface region.
