<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode type discharge lamp having an external electrode having a uniform outer diameter. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This external electrode type discharge lamp is an external electrode type discharge lamp for soldering the electrode to an outer peripheral surface of an end part in the axial direction of a glass tube sealed with a discharge medium. The electrode is composed of a conductive plate material spirally wound on the outer peripheral surface of the glass tube, and mutual side surfaces of adjacent plate materials are mutually opposed in the axial direction of the glass tube.
