Compounds of formula wherein each of X and Y is a halogen atom or a nitro group, and m + n is 0 or 1, and anhydrides thereof, are prepared by oxidation with chromic acid in sulphuric acid of a compound of formula followed if desired by heating to form the anhydride. The chromic acid may be prepared in situ by reaction of sulphuric acid with a sodium, potassium or ammonium bichromate or chromate or chromic anhydride. The oxidized product is preferably subjected to further treatment with an alkaline-activatable oxidizing agent, for example sodium or potassium hypochlorite, in aqueous alkaline solution.
