PURPOSE: A method for controlling a digital image processing apparatus and a digital image processing apparatus for operating by the method are provided to effectively utilize a face expression recognition function by informing to a user when the gesture of the face is unable to be recognized. CONSTITUTION: A face recognition part(72) recognizes a face range from first video data. A face area size determining unit(73) compares the size of the face range with the size recognizing the gesture of the face. A marking controller(75) controls the display of mark pointing the face range according to comparison results. If the size of the face range is the size recognizing the gesture of the face, the label inking controller indicates the first mark pointing the face range. If the size of the face range is the size which cannot recognize the gesture of the face, the label inking controller indicates the secondary primary mark pointing the face range.
