A variable geometry turbine comprises a housing, a turbine wheel supported within the housing for rotation about a turbine axis, an annular inlet passage within the housing upstream of the turbine wheel and defined between respective radial inlet surfaces of a first wall 25 and a second wall, and an outlet passage within the housing downstream of the turbine wheel. An array of vanes 29 extend across the inlet passage, the vanes 29 being connected to the first wall 25, at least one of the first and second walls being moveable along the turbine axis to vary the size of the inlet passage and/or at least one of the vanes 29 being rotationally moveable about an axis that is substantially parallel to the turbine axis to vary the size of the inlet passage. At least one particulate filter 31 is provided within the housing at a location such that the particulate filter 31 can be contacted by particulate matter (e.g. soot) flowing through the turbine during use. Also disclosed is a nozzle 24 for a variable geometry turbine, the nozzle including an array of vanes 29 extending from a first surface 30 of a wall 25, and two flanges 26, 27 which, together with a second surface 32 of the wall 25, define an annular space in which is provided a particulate filter 31. The variable geometry turbine may be part of an exhaust gas turbocharger. |
