<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture, at a low cost, a substrate for a liquid crystal display device, which has a common electrode pattern-formed by an etching method, and also has a projection for alignment restriction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the substrate for the liquid crystal display device includes: forming the common electrode over the entire surface of a substrate holding liquid crystal with negative dielectric constant anisotropy with an opposite substrate disposed oppositely to it; coating the common electrode with positive resist; performing pattern exposure/development by a photolithography method to remove positive resist at an unnecessary part; forming the pattern of the common electrode by etching; and further subjecting the remaining positive resist to pattern exposure/development to form the pattern of positive resist on the common electrode in a display area.
