1311290 Reduction of iron ore SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN AB 24 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 14171/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Iron ore in the form of concentrates or pellets are reduced in two stages. Using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 final reduction and melting of a pre-reduced charge is carried out in electrode furnace 2, a hydrocarbon gas such as liquified petroleum gas and steam being introduced through pipes 10 to provide the reducing atmosphere. The exhaust gases pass through duct 5 to furnace 1 which is filled with a scrap charge. One added from hopper 12 meets the incoming gas and is pre-reduced and deposits on the scrap as the gas passes downwardly therethrough to gas unit 6. When the operation in furnace 2 is finished and the melt tapped the functions of the furnaces are reversed, the electrode arch 3 and electrode free arch 4 being interchanged. Furnace 1 becomes a melting furnace while furnace 2 is charged with scrap to act as a pre-reduction furnace. |
