A control device (12) for a copy machine (28) or other type of vending machine has input and output control lines (26). The control device includes: a control line connector, an interface for reading a control signal; a CPU for determining the operational responses and outputs of the vending machine to corresponding control signals; and a memory for storing the data for later use. The controller includes a magnetic card reader (16) and communication interface for authorizing or denying transactions, and storage for storing transaction information.
