[Also in Division G2] Photopolymerizable compositions comprise (1) 40-90 parts by weight of a compatible, coherent film-forming macromolecular organic polymer having a molecular weight greater than 10,000, (2) 10-60 parts by weight of a non- gaseous ethylenically unsaturated compound containing 1-4 terminal ethylenic groups, having a molecular weight of at least 200, a boiling point above 100‹ C. at normal atmospheric pressure and being capable of photoinitiated addition polymerization, (3) 0À001-20 parts by weight of an addition polymerization initiator activatable by actinic light and inactive thermally below 85‹ C., and (4) 0À01-10 parts by weight of at least one covalent organometal compound of tin, lead, germanium or titanium having at least one carbon to metal bond. Exemplified as the polymer (1) are polymethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate/ methacrylic acid copolymer. Suitable as the unsaturated compound (2) are polyacrylate esters of C 2 -C 8 polyhydric alcohols, e.g. pentaerythritol triacrylate, tri- or tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, the triacrylate ester of a trimethylolpropane-ethylene oxide reaction product, and trimethylolpropane triacrylate. The initiator (3) may be, for example, a polynuclear quinone, e.g. 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, a photo-reducible dye, e.g. (New) Methylene Blue or Safranin Bluish, or carbon tetrabromide. The organometal compound (4) serves to increase the speed of the composition and may be, for example, tributyl tin chloride or acetate, triphenyl tin chloride or acetate, triethyl lead chloride, tetraphenyl tin, dibutyl tin oxide, tributyl tin resinate, butyl tin tribromide, tetrabutyl tin, tripropyl tin bromide, tetraethyl lead, triphenyl lead chloride, tetraphenyl lead, tetrabutyl germanium, tetraisopropyl titanium and tetrastearyl titanium. The compositions may also include carbon black, 5,5 - dimethyl - 1,3 - cyclohexadione (hydrogen donor), a cyanine dye (sensitizer), a blue dye (colourant) and triethylene glycol diacetate (plasticizer). The compositions are suitable for coating on to a support material to form photopolymerizable elements (see Division G2).
