An L.N.G. container comprises a tank supported externally by insulation, a flexible marginal portion of a tank wall being movable away from the insulation on contraction of an adjoining wall. In Fig. 1 insulation comprises plywood faced balsa panels 5 sealed with material 7 and balsa 9 with hardwood blocks 8. Tank 11 is of aluminium alloy. Each tank wall is slidably secured to the insulation by means 15 entering slots in blocks 8. Additionally the centre of the top and bottom walls is rigidly secured to the insulation. The bottom wall 13 is reinforced by a sheet 22. Beams 16, 17 are pivoted together and to the walls and wires 18 are connected between beam 16 and members 25 secured on the marginal portion 12b of side wall 12. On contraction of the tank the marginal portion 12b moves away from the insulation, wires 18 shaping this portion into two oppositely directed curves. The beams 16, 17 and wires 18 are replaced in Fig. 5 (not shown) by saddles 32 behind the flexible margins, in Fig. 8 (not shown) by cams and followers, and in Fig. 10 (not shown) by levers. |
