Single use deflectable stylet

A single use deflectable stylet for use in a catheter includes a deflectable portion 12 of a flexible material, the deflectable portion including a mounting formation 32 and a longitudinally extending deflecting portion 30 at least part of which has a non- circular cross-sectional area transverse to the longitudinal axis of the deflectable portion. The mounting formation 32 of the deflectable portion is mounted to the distal end of a stiffening element 16 which is sufficiently stiff in torsion to convert rotation at the proximal end into equivalent rotation at the distal end when the stylet is within the vasculature of a patient. An actuator 14 is attached through the stiffening portion to the deflectable portion so that manipulation of the actuator relative to the deflectable portion causes deflection of the deflectable portion.
