Provided is a chimeric DNA construct comprising a promoter molecule functional in a plant cell operably linked to an artificial polynucleotide molecule encoding a Caulobacter glyphosate resistant 5-enolpyruvyl-3-phosphoshikimate synthase (EPSPS) polypeptide, wherein said EPSPS polypeptide comprises the sequence domains G-D-K-S; S-A-Q-X2_K, in which X2 is I or V; and R-D-H-T-E, and N-E-L-R. Further provided are transgenic plants and seed comprising the DNA construct and a method of selectively killing weeds with glyphosate in a field planted with such transgenic plants.
