A system comprising a processor; computer-readable instructions that, upon execution by the processor, cause the processor to simulate cholesterol metabolism in an animal; a first user terminal; and a second user terminal is provided. The computer readable instructions include: i) mathematically representing one or more biological processes associated with lipoprotein particles; ii) mathematically representing one or more biological processes associated with lipid flux; and iii) defining a set of mathematical relationships between the representations of biological processes associated with lipoprotein particles and representations of biological processes associated with lipid flux; iv) applying a virtual protocol to the set of mathematical relationships to generate a set of outputs. The first user terminal is operable to receive a user input specifying one or more parameters associated with one or more mathematical representations defined by the computer readable instructions. The second user terminal is operable to provide the set of outputs to a second user.
