Novel cysteine protease inhibitors and their therapeutic applications

Disclosed is a compound of formula (I), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, hydrate, hydrated salt, polymorph, tautomer, or stereoisomer thereof, wherein m is 0, 1, or 2, and where if m is 0, ---(X)m--- is either a direct bond or absent, n is 0, 1, or 2, where if n is 0, ---(Y)m--- is either a direct bond or absent, mÆ and nÆ are each 0, 1, or 2, X is C, S, or N, --- represents an optional bond as appropriate, and wherein the other substituents are as described in the specification. Also disclosed is a process for preparing the compound. Also disclosed is the use of the compound for inhibiting cysteine proteases, de-ubiquitination enzymes, caspases, cathepsins, and calpains, and for treating diseases related to these mechanisms.
