A floating island comprising one or more layers of water-permeable, nonwoven mesh material (4) and expanding foam (10). The nonwoven mesh material comprises fibres. The foam is injected as a pressurised liquid into and through the fibres of the nonwoven mesh material. The expanding foam bonds together layers of the nonwoven mesh material.
