Disclosed is the use of a moisture-curable, isocyanate-functional composition in the manufacture of an adhesive for adhering tissue, the isocyanate-functional composition comprising the reaction product of a reaction mixture consisting essentially of: (a) a stoichiometric excess of multi-isocyanate functional molecules derived from multi-functional amino acid precursors; and (b) a multi-functional reactant selected from the group consisting of a saccharide, a polysaccharide, a steroid, glycerol, ascorbic acid, an amino acid, and combinations thereof, the multi-functional reactant having at least two isocyanate-reactive functional groups, wherein the reaction product has an average isocyanate functionality of at least 2.1.
