To prevent faecal leakage from the rectum 20 of the carcass of a small slaughtered animal the barbed legs 10, 11 extending from the platform 6 of a faecal reduction device are forced into the flesh 12 surrounding the rectum of the carcass to bring the rectum flesh together and raise the sphincter muscle 19 above the flesh so that the sphincter muscle is jammed between the rectum flesh and the underside of the platform 6 to block the rectum and prevent leakage of faecal matter from the rectum.
