A tool for making an electrical connection between an electrical terminal and a contact, one of which provides a recess for receiving in frictional engagement a plug portion of the other, comprises a shank member having at one end a longitudinal recess for receiving the terminal, shoulder engaging means being provided at or adjacent the outer end of the recess having stop-flanges for engaging shoulders projecting away from the terminal and at least a part of the wall of the shank being open so as to receive a wire or similar conductor secured to the terminal. The shank recess 2 has a flared opening defined in part by inclined faces 3 each of which has a marking die 4. The terminal is positioned in the recess with its shoulder portion 11, 11a between the faces 3 and its wire extending along the recess. The terminal is then engaged with a contact 12, 12a and telescoped together by manual pressure on the tool handle, or by impact, or both. In an embodiment the shank is mounted on a spring-loaded plunger 13 accommodated in a holder 14 which houses a spring-loaded hammer 16. The plunger passes through a plug 18 in the holder which also serves as an abutment for the plunger spring 15. The middle portion of the holder bore has a sloping cam surface 20. The hammer has an annular flange 16a at its lower end, a central hole 16b and a transverse recess 21 for accommodating an apertured slidable detent 22. A flat spring 24 urges a rounded portion of the detent against the holder bore so that a shoulder 27 on the plunger engages the detent. In operation pressure is applied to the holder to engage the terminal and contact and when frictional contact between the parts increases sufficiently the plunger moves inwardly and compresses the spring 17 until the hammer movement brings the detent against the cam 20 and dislodges it from the plunger shoulder 27 whereupon the hammer is released to deliver a sharp blow on the plunger to effect a good connection and emboss the terminal. In a modification the recess 2 is not formed as a channel but is closed at its outer end by a wall which is divided by a transverse slot into opposed flanges which engage under projecting portions of the terminal and may be used for extracting the terminal from the connector.
