PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for processing an audio signal are provided to control the level and location of an object using preset information including a preset rendering parameter and preset metadata. CONSTITUTION: An external preset information receiving unit(420) receives external preset information. The external preset information comprises rendering data, application object number information. An external preset information application determining unit(440) determines whether object number information included in the preset information is identical to the application object number information. The external preset information application determining unit determines whether the external preset information is applied to a down mix signal. When the object number information included in the preset information is identical to the application object number information, a rendering unit(470) renders the down mix signal using the external preset information.
