An elevator which is capable of proper braking control of a cage in accordance with detected fault details. The elevator comprises a semiconductor switch (44) which is connected in series with a brake coil (41) to be able to vary the current flowing through the brake coil (41), a shutoff switch (45) which is connected in series with the brake coil (41) and the semiconductor switch (44) to be able to shut off the current flowing through the brake coil (41), a braking force control processing means (53) for controlling the amount of the current flowing through the semiconductor switch (44) depending on deceleration of the cage at the time ofcage stoppage, a fault detection section (53a) for detecting a fault in the braking force control processing means (53), critical event detection means (51, 52) for detecting a critical event requiring emergency stop of the cage in accordance with a status detection signal, and a brake power supply shutoff means (54) for turning the shutoff switch (45) into OFF state and engaging the brake in the event of detection of both fault and critical event.
