The method involves screwing a plastic adjusting screw (6) in an internal thread (7) of a cylindrical part or drum (5) of a steering gear-box before being rotationally stopped in a selected position. An annular collar (9) is provided at a periphery of the screw, where the collar projects outside the screw. The collar is locally cut by using a tool e.g. punch, for forming diametrically opposite strips (14), after screwing the screw to an appropriate depth. Each strip is deformed by folding, and engaged in a corresponding notch (10) provided in the drum, using the single tool.
