PURPOSE: An image display device and a method of controlling the same are provided to supply an optimal image quality through implement of maximum contrast ratio by controlling a set value of variable factor. CONSTITUTION: In a image display device and a method of controlling the same, a histogram measuring unit(100) measures a histogram of an input image signal. A controller(140) changes at least two variable factor causing the brightness by corresponding to histogram. An image signal controller adjusts an image signal which is inputted by using the changed set value. The variable factor includes a brightness level according to DLC(Dynamic Luminance Control) curve, Hue, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, and the light level of a back light unit.
